How to Score

Until you become familiar with miscue analysis, I suggest that you use a tape recorder as a backup in order to revisit the assessment as many times as necessary.  Record the child reading from the text which was introduced the day before as "the new book".

Refrain from giving clues to the child and prompt him/her to "try something" when stumped.  Correct responses are marked with ticks (checks). Incorrect responses are notated with the correct word (text word) being placed underneath the incorrect one.  When a child corrects a word on his/her own, it is not counted as an error.

After the child completes the reading (100 words when available) take the amount or running words and divide it by the amount of errors.  This will give you an error rate which can be converted to a percentage. See the conversion table below.  With self -corrections add errors and self corrections and divide the number by the number of self-corrections made. This will give you a self-correction rate.
